From a hike up an extinct volcano, through vibrant forest, all the way down to rocky beaches; Ulleung has it all. It is not surprising that the main tag-line for this place is ‘The Mysterious Island’. When I first arrived on the island, I asked what would the most scenic walk to do and the answer was, ‘The sea walkway.’
Dodong Sea Walkway
Having now done it several times, I can confirm. Possibly one of the most scenic walks you can do here is the sea walkway from Dodong. The path starts at the Ferry Terminal and winds its way around volcanic rock, right next to the sparkling, blue ocean of the East Sea.
Where to go?
The walkway leads you to the Haengnam Beach (행남), where you can continue up to the Dodong lighthouse, make your way back to Dodong through the Forest Trail, or carry on to Jeodong (저동) along the old road. There used to also be a walkway all the way to Jeodong, but that closed and the bridges are in serious need of repair!
What to do!
Along the way you can stop off at pop-up restaurants for freshly caught fish, cold beer and live 노래 (Korean Karaoke). There is also a little mountain spring tucked away in a little cave if you want to sip some of the most refreshing water you have ever tasted.
At night you can see the distant glow of squid fishing boats on the horizon. Ulleung is famous for its squid and for good reason! The walkway is well lit and with the warm evening air it is a romantic way to spend the evening.
some practical things…
Apart from two steep sections, the walkway is a pleasant stroll. Monique and I have passed walkers who look well into their eighties. Hobbling along with walking sticks and they had no problem! I’d put the difficulty at maybe a 2/10 and that’s only if you’ve filled up on beer halfway!
If you’re in Korea or considering a trip, do yourself a favor and visit this mysterious little island just for its beautiful wonders!
